My timelapse files were eating 40GB a week until I changed one setting

Last month I was exporting 4K timelapses from my tablet for a client showcase and my hard drive kept filling up overnight. Three years ago I would've just bought another drive, but I finally sat down and looked at the file sizes. Turns out I was rendering at 60fps when the final piece only needed 24fps for smooth playback on their site. Switched to a variable bitrate in my export settings and the same 2 minute clip dropped from 2.1GB to 340MB. Also started saving a low-res preview copy first instead of the full res version every time I tweaked a color grade. The client couldn't tell the difference on their phone anyway. Anyone else accidentally over-rendering their showcase pieces and wasting storage on files nobody's gonna zoom into?

Yikes, I read a whole article about this last week and it said most people are exporting way more data than they need, it's crazy! I did something similar with my own travel videos, kept saving everything in 4K on my phone and cloud, then realized I only ever watched them back on a laptop screen. Even my projector at home maxes out at 1080p, so all that extra detail was just sitting there doing nothing. The preview copy trick is smart too, I started doing that for quick lookbacks and it saves so much hassle. Honestly, half the battle is just admitting you don't need the fanciest version of everything.

Hard disagree on this one. The whole point of shooting in 4K is future proofing, not just what you watch today. Screens keep getting better and cheaper every year, so that 1080p projector you have now might be 4K or 8K in a few years. If you dump your originals down to save space, you can never get that detail back. Storage is dirt cheap these days, a couple of external drives cost less than a dinner out. The preview copy thing is fine for casual browsing, but I keep the full quality master files for the memories that actually matter. You dont have to hoard every random clip, but the good stuff deserves the best version you can keep.
