Spent 4 hours on a digital painting and accidentally saved over it with a blank canvas.

Last Tuesday night I was finishing up a portrait commission in Procreate and somehow hit 'save as new' instead of duplicating the file. Now the only version left is a white screen with one brush stroke. Has anyone else lost work like this and found a way to recover it?

Ah man, "saved over it with a blank canvas" made me cringe so hard I think I pulled something. I did the exact same thing with a watercolor piece last year, except I was trying to back up to the cloud and just overwrote the original file like a genius. Procreate does have that auto-backup feature if you dig into the layers menu sometimes, but honestly I had zero luck getting anything back once it was gone. I ended up just staring at the ceiling for twenty minutes before realizing I had to redo the whole thing from memory. Now I literally duplicate every file three times before I even think about pressing save, because my brain refuses to learn from mistakes the first time around.

The triple backup method is the only way to go. Did this exact thing with a digital painting a few months back - had it on my iPad, thought I'd be smart and clean up my files, deleted the original without checking my backups. Spent a good hour just staring at my screen trying to remember how I did that specific brush stroke. Redoing it from memory is the worst because you know it's never gonna look the same. Now I keep copies on my tablet, phone, and an external drive just to be safe. What's your go-to backup method when you're deep in a project?
