The 3D pen I laughed at is now my favorite sculpting tool

Last month my client wanted a quick concept model of a weird spiral staircase and I didnt want to spend 45 minutes in Blender blocking it out. I grabbed a $25 3D pen from a discount store just to mess around and honestly I thought it would be garbage. But after three tries I got the hang of it and now Im using it to sketch physical forms before I commit to anything digital. Its not for fine detail but for rough shape exploration its so much faster than doing it on screen. The plastic cools quick and I can snap pieces together. Has anyone else started with a tool they thought was a toy and ended up using it in their real workflow? What was your moment that flipped it? How do you keep it from looking like a mess of spaghetti?

Parchment paper was the game changer, flat pieces beat freehand every time.

My first 3D pen attempt looked like a pile of tangled instant noodles after a blender accident, so I feel your pain on the spaghetti mess. The trick that saved me was drawing flat shapes on parchment paper, letting them harden, and then fusing them together like a plastic Lego set for adults. Also, if you hold the pen at a slower, steadier pace and pretend it's a glue gun with delusions of grandeur, the lines come out way cleaner. I still can't do fine detail worth a damn, but for rough blocking I'm convinced it's three times faster than my tablet.
