Ran into a fellow nomad in a Chiang Mai coworking space who said most of us are just tourists with laptops

She worked remote for a disaster relief nonprofit and told me staying in one place for 3 months is like dipping your toe in a pool, and it made me wonder how many of us actually engage with the places we go.

Your toe in the pool" comment is wild. 3 months in one spot is more than most people spend in their actual hometowns these days. Sounds like she's gatekeeping the whole nomad thing just because she works for a nonprofit and thinks that makes her more legit than someone coding or selling stuff online.

Exactly what makes her the gatekeeper of what "real" nomading looks like? Is it the job title or just the attitude? She's acting like working remotely for a nonprofit is somehow harder than what other people do, which is RIDICULOUS. Three months in one place is still a lot of moving around, especially when you factor in the stress of finding new apartments, changing internet providers, and learning a new city. Honestly, sounds like she's just trying to feel superior because her lifestyle is more "authentic" in her eyes. Why does she get to decide the rules for everyone else's travel style?

Bit tired of people acting like there's one right way to travel with a laptop.
