My buddy swears the judge let off his cousin just because they went to the same church.

Yeah but nobody's talking about whether the cousin was even guilty in the first place. Sometimes a judge just sees the evidence doesn't hold up and people read into it too much.

Blame my terrible memory but I'd probably let off a cousin too if I forgot the case details.
