My tape measure decided to retire mid-project yesterday

I was on a job in Austin laying out the studs for a wall and my trusty 25-foot Stanley just snapped its hook right off. No warning, no rust, just a clean break after I dropped it maybe 5 times over 3 years. I had to pause and borrow a coworker's old Lufkin while I figured out my next move. Anyone else have a tool fail at the worst possible moment like that?

Did it break right at the rivet or along the blade itself?

Right at the rivet, clean snap. Reminds me of that time my dad tried fixing a shovel with duct tape and zip ties, seemed solid for a week then just gave out. You get the same kind of thing with folding knives if the pin is cheap?

Had a cheap folding knife do the same thing at the rivet a few years back. Picked up a Mora instead for about the same money, never had that issue again. Sometimes it's just the way the pin is set, not the steel itself.
