Had a pump impeller shred itself on a sand job near Mobile Bay last month

We were moving about 500 cubic yards a day when the whole rig started shaking like crazy. Shut it down and pulled the pump, found three vanes were just gone, probably from a chunk of submerged timber. We had a spare on the tender, but it took my crew and me a solid four hours to swap it out in the heat. Anyone have a good trick for spotting those hidden logs before they hit the pump?

Honestly, that "hidden logs" thing is a total nightmare. Tbh, we've had some luck with a side scan sonar unit on the work boat. It's not perfect but it can spot the big stuff before you start pumping.

Sounds like a smart setup. I once tried to rig up a fish finder from my old bass boat for a similar job, thinking I was a genius. The screen just showed a bunch of blurry blobs that could have been a log, a giant catfish, or a shopping cart. We ended up just poking the mud with a pole. Felt real high-tech.

Our survey boat runs a magnetometer ahead of the dredge.
