PSA: A quick trick for spotting hidden snags in murky water

Last week on the Des Moines River, I was running the cutterhead and felt a weird, soft vibration through the controls (nothing like hitting rock). I shut down and had the deckhand drop a weighted line with a big hook, and we pulled up a whole submerged log wrapped in old cable about ten feet off the starboard side. How do you guys check for stuff like that when the water's too dirty to see more than a foot down?

Well that sounds like a fun little surprise package. Nothing like a mystery cable-wrapped log to keep things interesting. My method is less technical, more just poking the murk with a long pole and hoping for the best. Sometimes you just have to accept the river is hiding its toys.

Sounds like a great way to lose a perfectly good pole.

Ever try a heavy magnet on a rope?
