TIL I've been running my suction head way too shallow for years, after a retired operator in Mobile told me to watch the slurry density instead of just the depth gauge.

Has anyone else found that focusing on the material coming up, not just the numbers on the screen, gets you a better cut?

What slurry density were you actually aiming for?

We overshot it badly last spring, ended up with something closer to peanut butter. Had to add three extra gallons of water just to get it moving through the pump again. Total mess.

Peanut butter sounds like a bit of an exaggeration, doesn't it? Slurry gets thick sometimes but three whole gallons to fix it seems wild. Pumps handle thick stuff all the time. Maybe the mix was off from the start, not just a simple overshoot. Sounds more like a bad batch than a total disaster.
