Had an old timer tell me my butt joints were too tight and he was right after 10 years of doing it wrong

I used to jam those factory edges together so the joint was almost invisible but he showed me how leaving a credit card gap keeps the tape from bubbling up later, anyone else still fighting old habits from when you started?

My cousin used toothpicks as spacers for like three years before someone told him that was way too much. @baker.christopher is right about humidity though, I worked a job in Arizona and you could leave a dime gap and the mud would still crack. That tight joint thing only works if you're in a climate controlled shop and even then I've seen it fail.

Funny you mention that gap thing, my first boss swore by a popsicle stick gap for everything, but then I worked with a guy who did his butt joints so tight you could barely see them and he never had tape issues. I think a lot of it depends on the humidity where you're at honestly. Still catch myself trying to hide those seams sometimes even though I know better.

Arizona dry air will humble anybody's gap theory.
