I actually like the old school hand taping over the automatic banjo
Been doing drywall for about 12 years now out of a shop in Fort Worth. Everyone I work with swears by those automatic taping tools and says hand taping is for rookies. But I switched back to a 6 inch knife and a mud pan last month on a 3,000 square foot house and my corner joints came out way flatter with less sanding. Am I the only one who thinks the banjo is more trouble than it's worth for anything under a full warehouse job?

Gotta say this is a REALLY interesting take because nobody talks about how the hand taping gives you way more control over your mud consistency on the fly. When you're running a banjo you're stuck with whatever mix you loaded in there but with a knife you can adjust for each joint's needs. Plus I've noticed the automatic tools tend to leave tiny air bubbles in the mud that show up after painting.

Those air bubbles in the mud - are you finding them more in certain brands or more of an issue with the specific tool's mixing action?

Slight correction: banjos keep the mud pretty consistent with a good mix.
