Tried both taping knives for a whole week and one is clearly junk

Borrowed my buddy's stainless steel taping knife last week and used it alongside my cheap carbon steel one. The stainless one didn't leave those stupid rust flecks on the mud and washed off way easier. Anyone else switch materials and notice a difference?

Yeah but cheap carbon steel works fine if you keep it dry and clean.

@walker.julia I gotta push back on that a little. Yeah, carbon steel works if you're obsessive about drying it, but in real world use that's just not happening for most of us. The stainless knife saved me way more time not having to scrub off rust stains from the mud. Also the flex on cheap carbon blades wears out way faster, I noticed mine got wavy after a few months. The weight difference is another thing nobody talks about, stainless feels more balanced in your hand. Have you tried a mid-range stainless one and noticed the same?

Yo @quinnm77 has anyone actually gotten a carbon steel knife to stay rust-free for more than a week? I swear mine looked like it was trying to turn into a prop from a horror movie after one camping trip. The weight thing is real too, my stainless one feels way better in hand than that clunky carbon rust bucket ever did. Plus that wavy edge problem you mentioned, happened to mine too, like the blade just gave up on life. Basically carbon steel is for people who like to spend more time caring for their tools than actually using them.
