My first foreman swore by using a dab of grease on the governor rope sheaves
He said it would cut down on wear and squealing, but after a year I found it just attracted grit and accelerated groove wear on the polyurethane. Anyone have a better trick for quieting down a noisy governor system?

Yeah, that old grease trick is a total trap. It just makes a grinding paste that eats through everything. A light silicone spray works way better without holding all that junk.

Seems like people are making this out to be a bigger deal than it is. Most folks just slap some grease on a squeaky hinge and call it a day, and their doors work fine for years. Calling it a total trap is a bit much. Sure, silicone spray is cleaner, but that old grease trick gets the job done without causing a disaster every time.

Actually depends on the grease and the application. White lithium grease on door hinges is fine because it's a closed area. The problem is using heavy grease where dirt can get in, like on bike chains or garage door rollers. That's when it turns into a grinding paste. Silicone spray is great for dusty places.
