TIL most guys at the clinic said to always use a rasp before the finish, but I tried skipping it on a draft horse last week.
The hoof was super smooth after the nippers, so I went straight to the buffer and saved about 15 minutes. Has anyone else tried this on a calm horse?

Sounds like you got lucky with a cooperative horse.

Nah, it was all about the groundwork first.

Wesley's right about the cooperative horse being key. That smooth finish you got depends entirely on a perfect clip and a horse that stands like a statue. On a fidgety one, skipping the rasp leaves no room to fix little dips or high spots the buffer just can't handle.
