A lady in Cincinnati offered me a plate of spaghetti through her fence while I was setting posts.
She just slid it under the gate and said 'you look hungry, honey' before I could even get a word out, and honestly, it was the best lunch I've had on a job site.

My neighbor in Akron did that with chili dogs once. Still remember it, cold day and everything. Some people just get it.

Sounds a little weird to just take food from a stranger, even through a fence. Not sure I'd eat it.
