Rant: I heard a guy at the supply house say you should never use a tapping block on click vinyl.

He was telling a new installer that it always damages the locking system. I've been using a rubber mallet and a scrap piece for years without a single callback. I think the trick is to tap along the whole edge, not just one spot. Has anyone else had good luck with this method?

Yeah, the "never use a tapping block" rule is like my old boss saying I'd never finish a job on time. It's all about how you use it. I've done the same thing with a scrap piece and a mallet for ages, just tapping down the whole seam. That guy at the supply house is probably just repeating something he heard once.

Exactly, that "gentle, even spread" with a long scrap piece is the only way I've ever done it too.

My buddy had a helper who would whale on the locking seam with a hammer and a tiny block, just one spot. It cracked the tongue right off. The trick is using a long scrap piece, like you said, and light taps all down the edge to ease it in. That guy's blanket rule is probably from seeing hacks do it wrong. A gentle, even spread with the right block works fine in my experience.
