Warning: My wife's friend from Denver just asked if we could install her new floor over the old shag carpet.

She was totally serious, said it would add 'cushioning' and save on removal costs. I had to explain the whole moisture and stability thing for like twenty minutes. Has anyone else had a client suggest something that wild?

My neighbor tried to lay laminate right over his old linoleum kitchen floor last year. He was convinced the underlayment would smooth everything out. We had to help him pull it all up six months later when the seams started popping and the floor felt like a trampoline.

Classic case of skipping the prep work. That foam underlayment is NOT a magic fix for a bad subfloor. Linoleum gets dents and dips over time, especially in a kitchen. You need a truly flat surface or those click lock joints just can't handle the stress. It's a recipe for a bouncy, broken floor every single time.

Wait, over the shag carpet? That's a whole new level. I could maybe see someone asking about old vinyl or something flat, but the idea of compressing all that shag down evenly (and it staying that way) is just wild. You'd have hills and valleys everywhere in a month.
