A client told me my invoices were confusing and they were right
They said the line items were vague and the due date was hard to find. I switched to a template that shows the work date, a clear description, and puts the total due in bold at the top. Anyone have a good free invoice tool they like?

Been there. I used to just write "design work" on mine and people would get lost. What template did you end up using? I found that adding a short project name next to each date, like "Homepage Redesign - May 5", cut down on questions a lot. Putting the total up top was a game changer for me too.

Oh yeah, I saw a blog post about that exact thing!

Totally! I did the same thing last year. Just adding "Logo Project - June" made clients stop asking what each line was for. Game changer for sure.

The due date being hard to find is the real killer. I learned to put it right under the client's address in a bigger font, not just near the total. A template can help, but you have to check that the key info actually stands out. My first few tries just moved the problem around because the date still blended in.
