Bought a cheap smart plug that nearly fried my coffee maker

Got one of those no-name smart plugs online for about $15 last Tuesday. Wanted to set my coffee maker to start before I woke up. Plugged it in, connected to the app, seemed fine. Next morning, woke up to a burning smell from the kitchen. The plug was super hot to the touch and the coffee maker wouldn't turn on. Unplugged everything fast. The coffee maker works again on a normal outlet, thankfully. The plug is now in the trash. Should have checked for safety certifications. Has anyone else had a gadget fail in a scary way like that?

Totally feel you on that. Had a cheap phone charger melt the plastic on my nightstand once. The smell was awful and it left this weird burn mark. Never skimp on electronics now.

Yikes, that's terrifying. I had a generic power strip start smoking once. Now I only buy stuff with UL listed right on the plug itself, even if it costs a few bucks more. It's just not worth the risk.

Guess @lily_cooper's dollar store finds are just trying to keep us warm this winter.

Damn, smoking power strips are no joke. Where did you buy that generic one from? I've seen some sketchy ones at dollar stores that look like fire hazards waiting to happen.
