My friend in Portland told me to keep my garage door open while working on a big piece
He said it would help with the heat and fumes, but I tried it last week and my 18 inch vase cracked straight down the side from a draft. I mean, maybe it works for him up there, but the wind here in Albuquerque is no joke. Has anyone else had a piece ruined by a sudden breeze like that?

So your friend's Portland garage advice gave you a free vase redesign, huh? That's some expensive cross-ventilation. I guess Albuquerque wind treats pottery like it's auditioning for a split screen effect. Maybe tell your pal to send his next tip via carrier pigeon, since his weather reports are clearly broken.

My old studio in Santa Fe had the same problem. I lost a whole set of mugs to a sudden gust one afternoon. Now I just crack a window and use a cheap box fan pointed out. It pulls the air and heat out without the direct wind hitting your work.

Yeah that box fan trick is a lifesaver. I had a whole batch of plates get ruined when my studio door swung open during a storm. The wind just sliced right through them while they were leather hard. Now I do the exact same thing, fan in the window blowing out, and crack another window across the room. It moves the air so much better and you don't get those random gusts.
