inHad a total data wipe scare last Tuesday because I didn't verify my cloud backup was actually running.
Honestly that part about the kid's first trip to the beach really hits home. I read this article once that said if a memory only exists in one place, it basically doesn't exist. It sounds harsh but it's true. Your friend's story is exactly why. Tbh I started backing things up after my own scare with a laptop crash. It's just not worth the heartbreak.

inFound a weird trick to get a better mic test on my phone for video reviews
Totally agree with @jenny_lane12, you need the right gear for different noise types. A good directional mic is key for cutting out that random chatter.

inSpent $400 on a new climbing rope and it snapped on me last month
That "pop" sound is terrifying. My buddy had a similar thing happen with a brand new rigging line, just snapped clean during a light pull.

That's a really good point about the pilots' mindset. I hadn't thought about it from their side of the cockpit door. For a student pilot, that first solo is nerve-wracking enough without doubting the plane. So that 50-year safety record isn't just a stat, it's a mental safety net. Do you think that level of ingrained trust actually makes them better pilots in the long run, because they're not fighting the machine?

inThe real story behind the power grid failure in Portland last winter
My buddy tried that exact setup last winter. His generator just shut down with a loud pop after ten minutes. Fried the circuit board in the heater too. Had to wait days for a replacement in the cold. Really not worth the risk on a small unit.
