Found a weird trick to get a better mic test on my phone for video reviews

I was trying to record a voiceover for a review of a new power bank in my apartment, but the audio kept picking up a low hum from the fridge. I put the phone inside a folded winter coat on a chair, hit record, and the hum was almost gone. Has anyone else found a cheap way to cut background noise without buying a real mic?

That's a clever fix for a fridge hum, but it only works for that specific low frequency sound. Most background noise like traffic or voices is way harder to block out with just fabric. You really need a proper mic with a directional pickup pattern to solve the general problem.

Totally agree with @jenny_lane12, you need the right gear for different noise types. A good directional mic is key for cutting out that random chatter.

Disagree completely. People get too hung up on gear and forget the basics. A quiet room and some simple sound blankets can fix most noise problems for free. Directional mics are not magic, they still pick up plenty of background sound if you're in a bad spot. Throwing money at a new mic is often just avoiding the real work of finding a better recording space.
