Back when they first started pushing electronic logbooks on us

I thought it was just more paperwork junk from the office. Then we got a plane in from a small field in Montana with a weird vibration, and the old paper logs were a mess. The new system had a full engine history with one click, showing a recurring fuel pump note from three shops. Found a worn coupling the paper trail missed. How many of you guys had to eat your words on the digital switch?

That binder full of handwritten squawks is a great backup, but it shouldn't be finding things the main system misses. That means your digital logs aren't being filled out right. If a pilot writes up a vibration on paper, that same squawk needs to be in the computer too. The real power is having all that stuff in one place you can search. Otherwise you're just making double work and things will still slip through.

Our shop in Tucson still has a binder full of handwritten squawks that find things the digital system misses.

My own paper logs were basically just coffee coasters.
