That chat with a homeowner about glass break sensors threw me off

I was finishing up a install at this older house in Austin last week, and the homeowner, this retired electrician, comes out and starts asking why I put the glass break sensor right by the big window in the living room. He said he always put them near the ceiling corners for better coverage. I kinda shrugged it off at first, but then he pulled out his phone and showed me a photo of his own setup with the sensor actually tucked behind a curtain, not even in the direct line of sight. I told him that's not how the manual says to do it, but he argued that the sound bounces differently in a room with hardwood floors and tall ceilings. Honestly, I tested it out with a key jingle and it picked up way clearer than I expected. Now I'm wondering if I've been placing these things wrong for like 5 years. Has anyone else run into a homeowner who knew more about a specific trick than you did?

Ha, @corah75 nailed it with that whole "skipped a chapter" feeling. It's wild how much real world experience beats the book, it's like when you see a mechanic use a zip tie instead of a ten dollar bracket and it just works better.

Oh man, this hits close to home. I had a homeowner in Houston show me that sticking the sensor near a curtain rod actually caught the vibration from windows rattling in storms better than the break itself. Made me feel like I skipped a whole chapter in the install guide. Now I always ask people if they've tried weird spots before I lock mine in.

Felt that one. Had a guy in a old craftsman house show me he put his sensor behind a heavy curtain facing the corner and it picked up way better than the ceiling mount I was about to do. Made me question everything for a solid week. Now I always ask homeowners if theyve got any tricks, especially the older ones whove tinkered with their own gear for years. That whole "experience beats the manual" thing is real, even if it stings the pride a little.
