I finally bought a proper desk lamp after years of squinting

I spent $45 on an architect lamp with a dimmable LED arm from a local office supply store last month. My old one was just a cheap $10 clamp light from a hardware store that gave me headaches after 2 hours of browsing forums. Turns out having adjustable brightness and a neutral white tone actually makes a difference when I'm reading subtitles late at night. I can finally see all the background details in those dense mecha shows without leaning forward. Has anyone else found that a good desk lamp improved your viewing setup or am I just getting old?

@jessem59 nailed it with the warmer bulb tip. I run a 3000K dimmable Philips and it changed everything. The old 5000K was too clinical, made my eyes tired after one episode. Now I can binge three episodes of Gundam without squinting at the mobile suit details. Strongly recommend anyone try a warmer tone before upgrading the whole lamp.

Oh man, I was totally the opposite for the longest time. I used to think warmer bulbs looked dim and old fashioned, like something from a basement rec room. But I swapped my 5000K LED for a 2700K dimmable one after reading a few threads like this, and I get it now. The difference in eye strain is no joke, I can actually watch three episodes without rubbing my eyes. I still keep a bright bulb in my desk lamp for reading, but for TV and anime, warm is the way to go. It just feels more natural and way less harsh on the eyes.

Getting a warmer bulb made way more difference than I expected for late night anime binging.
