A customer called me out for using a putty knife on a dishwasher door seal

Last month I was fixing a leaking dishwasher in Eugene and used a putty knife to pop off the old rubber seal like I always do. The homeowner watched me for a second and said 'you're gonna scratch the porcelain with that.' I hadn't even thought about it before. Any tips for getting those seals off without damaging the door?

Last time I did that I left a scratch mark right down the front.

Oh man, I've been there... that little scratch just stares at you every time you walk by the kitchen. What I started doing is taking a plastic trim removal tool, the kind for car door panels, and using that instead. You can get a set for like eight bucks at any auto parts store. Slide it under the seal and work it loose slow, no metal edge to dig into the porcelain. Also helps to hit it with a little heat from a hair dryer first to soften the rubber, makes it peel off way cleaner without fighting you.
