That old timer who told me to stop using silicone on fridge gaskets

Bob at the local parts shop swore silicone was the worst thing for sealing fridge doors because it makes the gasket slippery and break down faster. I used it anyway on a job last month and now the customer is calling back about the door not closing tight. Why do we keep ignoring advice from guys who have been doing this 30 years?

Learn from Bob on this one... silicone really does wreck rubber gaskets over time.

Has anyone else had a batch of seals just crumble after using silicone lube? I grabbed the wrong tube once and every gasket I touched turned into sticky mush within a month. Bob's totally right - that stuff is nasty on rubber, especially on older seals that are already a bit dry.

Freaked me out reading that crumbling story. I've got a tube of silicone lube sitting in my truck right now. Never even thought about what it does to the rubber long term. Guess I'm throwing it in the trash today. That Bob guy sounds like he knows his stuff.
