Threw $150 at a 'premium' VPN service for nothing
Last month I signed up for this VPN that all the tech reviewers were hyping up, paid $150 for a whole year upfront. I figured it would protect my browsing and let me stream stuff from other countries no problem. But man, it was so slow, like dial-up era slow, and half the streaming sites just blocked it anyway. I spent like 3 hours on their support chat and they kept saying 'try a different server' but nothing worked. Honestly I feel like I got tricked by all the sponsored reviews online. Has anyone else had a VPN totally fail on them like this?

Yeah I gotta disagree a bit here. $150 upfront is a lot but some of those bigger VPNs have way more servers and actually work better for streaming when you figure out the right settings. I've tried both big and small and honestly the big names handled my Netflix just fine after a quick tweak.

Man that sucks, I've been there before and it's infuriating. You shell out good money because of all the hype and then it's basically useless. My rule of thumb now is to never pay for more than a month at a time until I know it actually works for what I need. A lot of those so-called premium VPNs are just all marketing and no substance. I've found that a lot of the smaller, less advertised ones actually let you try before you buy and their speeds are way better. Did you manage to get your money back or are you stuck with it for the year?

Different strokes for different folks I guess, but yeah @grantw41 that one month rule is solid. I got burned by a big name VPN once too, the one with all the celebrity endorsements (you know the one). Their "no log" policy turned out to be a joke when my ISP still saw my traffic. I switched to a smaller provider that costs like $3 a month and it's been night and day - no throttling, no weird slowdowns, and their customer support is actually run by humans. Good luck getting that year refund though, those companies make it nearly impossible once you're locked in.
