Had to choose between a $1500 used frame rack or a new stud welder for my garage. Bought the welder and just pulled a quarter panel on a Civic.

That's a solid choice. I had a similar debate last year when my old floor jack gave out. Spent the money on a good set of jack stands and a transmission jack instead of a fancy tool cart. Felt like a weird move at the time, but being able to safely drop a transmission by myself made it worth it. The right tool for the job you actually do changes everything.

Oh man, dereks11 is totally right. I mean, it's not just about having the gear, it's about actually using it every single time. I've seen people get lazy with stands because a quick tire change feels safe enough. But that's how my neighbor crushed his foot, just being in a hurry. Buying the gear is step one, but making it a non-negotiable habit is the real smart move.
