Had to pick between a full avionics rack swap or a targeted component fix on a King Air 200 last Tuesday.
I went with the component fix using a spare Garmin GNS 430 from our parts cage, which got the plane back in the air in 4 hours instead of 2 days, but now I'm second-guessing if that was the right long-term call for the whole system's health.

That old GNS 430 is a band-aid, man. You're just kicking the can down the road until the next part of that old rack fails.

Had the same debate with myself last year. Finally bit the bullet and upgraded the whole stack. Yeah it hurt the wallet, but the peace of mind is worth it.

Kicking the can down the road" makes it sound way more doomed than it is. A lot of those old units are built like tanks and just keep working. If it's passing checks and doing the job, where's the actual fire? Not every old part is a ticking time bomb. Sometimes a band-aid is all you really need to keep flying for years.
