My $400 GPS unit bricked on day 3 of the JMT
Forgot my paper map in the car. GPS crapped out near Muir Trail Ranch. Had to buddy up with a stranger for navigation the rest of the trip. Has anyone else had tech fail at the worst moment?

The buddy system is solid advice." @the_alex knows what's up. This whole thing is just the same pattern as forgetting your wallet at home or your charger on a trip. We all think one digital thing will save us, then reality hits.

That Muir Trail Ranch stretch is brutal even with a working GPS, I almost cried when my phone died right before Mather Pass last summer. Now I keep a tiny paper map in my pack as backup no matter what, learned that lesson the HARD way.
