Warning about those 'quick forge' firebrick kits
I dropped about $150 on a kit that promised a ready-to-go forge in an hour. The bricks crumbled into dust after the first real heat cycle. Anyone know a solid source for decent soft firebrick that won't turn to powder?

Yeah, those kits often use the cheapest insulating brick, not proper refractory. You need to look for a 2600 degree rated soft brick, the white kind. Anything labeled "insulating firebrick" from a pottery or kiln supplier should hold up.

It's the same with a lot of hobby gear, they bank on you not knowing the specs. You see it in home brewing with cheap plastic fermenters or in woodworking with saw blades that dull after two cuts. They sell the idea but use materials that barely function.

Ugh, I used to fall for that "fast and easy" marketing too. Learned the hard way that proper bricks are worth hunting down. Mason's right, a real supplier is the only way to go.
