My cousin's news blooper reel made me rethink my own editing habits

My cousin works at a local station in Toledo and he put together a 3 minute reel of their worst on-air mistakes for a holiday party. One clip had the weather map glitching so the anchor's hand was pointing at a lake while she said sunny. Then the closed captions said 'duck' instead of 'dusk.' He laughed but also said they keep every blooper file because viewers send them in all the time. That got me thinking about my own video editing for my small channel. I delete my mistakes right away and never look back. Maybe I should keep a few of my own bloopers for engagement or just to track how much I improve. Has anyone else started saving their mess-ups after seeing a pro reel like that?

Oh wow, that really hits home, I do the same thing and delete my mistakes before anyone can see them!

That "duck instead of dusk" line got me... I saw a thing online about how news stations actually keep those reels for training purposes. Apparently they use them to show newbies what not to do on air. Made me think about my own stuff too. I started a blooper folder after reading that, just random clips where I flub a line or the camera angle goes weird. Not gonna post them yet, but it’s kind of cool to look back and see where I tripped up.

A blooper folder is a smart move, honestly. Those outtakes show the real work behind the polished stuff... plus they're funny as hell years later. Just don't let anyone see it until you're ready, or it becomes a whole thing.
