The way I stored board game boxes for 10 years was totally wrong

I had all my games stacked flat on top of each other in a closet. Seemed fine until I pulled out my copy of Puerto Rico from 2008 and the box top was all caved in. My buddy Steve came over and saw my stack, he just shook his head and said "you're crushing them, man." He showed me how he stores his games standing up like books on a shelf and now I feel dumb for never thinking of that. Anyone else make this mistake for years?

My 2012 copy of Dominion had the same issue and now I store everything standing up.

Couldn't agree more, I did the exact same thing with my old games and learned the hard way. My copy of Agricola from 2010 has a permanent dent on one corner now. It made me wonder though, do you keep all your games vertically or do you have some big heavy ones that still get laid flat on the bottom? I've got a few like Gloomhaven that I'm honestly scared to store any other way because the box is so massive and heavy. Do you think it actually matters for those giant boxes or is the weight too risky no matter what?

Steve stored his Twilight Imperium boxes sideways for years and the inserts all slid around and wrecked the components.
