A quick thing I heard at the supply yard about mixing small batches

I was picking up some type N mortar in Akron yesterday and overheard a guy telling his apprentice to always mix a little extra for the last few bricks. He said, 'A half bucket extra is cheaper than a whole new bag.' It made me realize I've been cutting it too close on small repair jobs and running back to the truck. Now I just mix that extra bit from the start. Anyone else have a simple rule like that they follow to save a trip?

Remember that leftover mortar can't be saved for tomorrow anyway.

Wasn't there an article in one of the trade mags about material waste? It said the cost of leftover mix is way less than the labor for a second trip. That guy's rule about the half bucket is basically the same math, just way simpler to remember on site.

Oh, that reminds me of the time we had to redo a whole corner because we ran short.
