My attempt at a 'free' city tour in Prague went totally wrong
I read online about these 'free' walking tours where you just tip at the end. So I joined one in Prague's Old Town. The guide was great, but at the end he gave a big speech about how he worked for tips and stared everyone down. I felt so pressured I gave him 500 Czech koruna, which is like $22. That was way more than I planned to spend on a tour that day. I learned that 'free' often means high-pressure tipping, and it's not really a budget hack if you feel forced to pay more than a set ticket. Now I look for tours with a clear, small price upfront. Has anyone found a good way to enjoy guided tours without this awkward tipping situation?

Wait, he actually stared everyone down while giving that speech? That's some next-level pressure right there, like a weird group guilt trip.

Was your guide a big guy with a red hat? Sounds exactly like the tour I got stuck with last year. I used to defend those free tours as a good deal for students, but that same stare-down changed my mind completely. Now I just book the cheap paid tours from the hostel, it costs less than what I felt forced to tip. The whole thing just feels like a trick.

Honestly @zara_sanchez calling it a "trick" feels harsh. That guide is just trying to make a living, and the stare is probably because he's had too many people take the whole tour and then just walk off. You know exactly what you're getting into with a free tour, it's a tip-based job. If you can't afford to tip, you should pick a paid one from the start.
