Three years ago I thought monthly budgets were a trap

Back in 2021 I laughed at my sister for tracking every dollar in a notebook, figured it was just control freak behavior. Then I added up my coffee shop runs last month in Denver and saw $87 on lattes alone, which hit different when I realized that's half my grocery budget. Anyone else get stubborn about budgeting until they saw a specific number that made them flip?

Budgets actually work best when you track the tiny stuff first, not the big bills. Seeing $87 in coffee made me realize how small things add up way faster than rent or insurance ever could. That specific number shock is the only thing that made it click for me too.

Isn't it harder to change big habits than small coffee runs though?

$87 on lattes in a month is wild to me, that's like a full week of groceries for my household. I get the stubborn thing though, I was exactly the same until I saw my own credit card statement and nearly choked on my water. That kind of hard number really does smack you out of denial mode.
