My mandoline blade finally snapped mid-slice yesterday

I was prepping 40 pounds of potatoes for a catering gig and my cheap mandoline just gave out on the 15th spud. The blade popped right off the plastic frame and flew across the kitchen. I had to finish slicing by hand which took twice as long and my wrist is still sore today. Has anyone else had a tool fail at the worst possible time? What did you switch to?

Oh man that's the worst! It's funny how stuff always breaks right when you need it most, not when you're just sitting around testing it lol. I've noticed that pattern a lot in my own kitchen too. Cheap tools seem to have this built in timer where they'll hold up fine for a year then crap out on a busy day. Same thing happened to me with a garlic press once during a big dinner rush. Kinda makes you think about how much we rely on these little gadgets working perfectly until they don't.

Bet on the Japanese ones, they're built like tanks compared to the plastic junk.

Heard a pro chef say the only mandolines worth buying are the all-metal Japanese ones.
