That old timer in Port Fourchon told me to always double check my tank valves before a dive.

I blew off his advice last month, skipped the check, and ended up with a freeflow at 60 feet that cost me a whole day and $300 in lost gear; has anyone else had a simple safety step save their bacon?

Hannah's got me dead to rights there (ouch). Yeah, that freeflow was basically the universe yelling at me to stop being a lazy diver and actually pay attention. Guess I learned the hard way that "trusting your gut" is just code for "you're skipping steps and hoping for the best.

You mentioned he told you to "always double check" and you "blew off his advice" after skipping one check. Do you think it was just the one time you got lucky before, or is there a deeper habit of rushing through pre-dive checks you're only now noticing? I'm curious if that one freeflow actually changed how you approach the whole checklist or just that specific valve.

Yeah that part about "deeper habit" really hit me. I think for a lot of us it's easy to get into a rhythm where you're doing the checks but not really thinking about them, you know? Like you're just going through the motions because nothing bad has happened yet. @hannah_west39 I wonder if the freeflow was kind of a wake up call that made her realize she was rushing more broadly, not just on that one valve. It's scary how one close call can reframe your whole approach to something you thought you had down.
