Just realized I was overworking my broom finish on driveways

A foreman in Tacoma told me my broom lines were too deep, saying 'You're making a slip hazard for winter.' I switched to a softer bristle brush and lighter pressure, and the traction is way better. Anyone else get called out for a finish that was technically okay but practically wrong?

My uncle had a similar issue with his deck staining business in Spokane. He used a super thick coat that looked great in summer but peeled like crazy after one freeze. A repeat client finally told him it was like walking on ice chips every spring. He had to strip three decks and redo them with a thinner application.

That Spokane winter is no joke for deck finishes. My cousin in Coeur d'Alene learned the same lesson the hard way with a cedar fence project. He put on a thick layer of sealant trying to make it last, and the whole thing just flaked off in sheets after the first cold snap. It's a brutal way to find out that thin coats are the only thing that can handle the freeze and thaw. I felt so bad for him because the redo cost him the whole profit from the job. It really makes you respect how much the weather changes what materials can do.

That "walking on ice chips" line is my whole career in one picture.
