My worst writing week started with a stolen laptop in a Denver coffee shop

I lost a whole novel draft and three months of notes because I didn't back anything up to the cloud. Has anyone else had a project disaster that actually forced you to change your process?

Watched a friend lose his entire thesis when his hard drive crashed. He now saves everything in three different places.

Ugh, that's the worst. I learned the hard way too. I keep a copy on my computer, one on an external drive I update weekly, and a third gets auto-saved to a cloud service. It sounds like overkill until you need it. That third backup saved a client presentation for me last month when my laptop just quit.

My laptop died last year and I lost a whole project.

Wait, is backing up everything really that necessary for most people? Unless you're doing something super critical like building a client presentation or writing a thesis, losing a project might not be the end of the world. I've had a laptop die on me too, and sure it stung a little, but it was mostly old photos and some documents I could find again if I really needed them. Maybe people are just being overly paranoid about stuff that doesn't matter that much in the long run.
