TIL the first deep fake I ever fell for was a Tom Cruise TikTok from over two years ago

I went back and compared it to his real interviews last week and the biggest tell was the way his eyes blinked with no natural symmetry, which nobody was pointing out back then.

Three seconds in and I was ready to rewatch Mission Impossible, completely fooled. Now I'm the weirdo pausing every influencer video to count their blinks, like some kind of blink detective nobody asked for. Thanks a lot, Tom Cruise deep fake, you ruined my casual scrolling forever.

Downtown LA had a whole pop up art exhibit about deep fakes last winter and they had a station where you could watch your own face get swapped onto different actors. It was creepy but also kind of fun for about five minutes until you realize how easy it is to fool your own brain. I think that's why the Cruise thing worked so well, because our eyes just aren't trained to look for those tiny digital tells in a second long clip. Now I can't stop noticing how weird everyone's blinks look in videos and it's honestly ruined a lot of TikTok for me.

Did you catch the way his smile lines didn't quite match up either?
