Guy at a gallery told me my neon outlines looked like a coloring book

Some random dude at a local show in Portland said my character art looked unfinished because I didn't blend the edges. I asked him if he'd ever heard of cel shading, but he just walked off. Anyone else deal with people who think everything needs to look like an oil painting?

Ugh, that coloring book comment is SO annoying. People just hear "neon" and think "kids craft project." Cel shading is a legitimate style, it's not "unfinished" just because it doesn't have blended gradients. Some folks can't see past their own oil painting preferences. Let them stay boring.

Cel shading hides mistakes though? Isn't that the whole point of blending to fix stuff?

Saw a tech artist on Twitter last week breaking down how cel shading actually requires more precision with shapes since you can't hide mistakes in gradients. @brooke_taylor44 I'm with you on the coloring book thing, people hear "flat colors" and think it's lazy when really it's a different skill set. The whole "unfinished" take just shows they're judging from their own comfort zone instead of looking at what the style is actually doing.
