I finally figured out why I kept crying at the grocery store
This older guy at the deli counter saw me tearing up over sliced turkey and just said "first few months are the worst, aren't they?" Turns out he'd been divorced for 8 years and still avoids the frozen food aisle because that was his ex's favorite section. Has anyone else got weird trigger spots that hit you out of nowhere?

bro that "first few months are the worst" line hit me hard. I used to think grief triggers were just for like... big obvious stuff like anniversaries or birthdays. But man, I was so wrong. I remember laughing at my buddy who couldn't walk past the ice cream aisle after his breakup, calling him dramatic. Then my dog died and I literally had to stop going to the pet supply store for like 6 months because seeing the treats aisle destroyed me every time. Now I get it completely. It's those random everyday places that mess you up the most because you don't see them coming.

Damn, that hit me right in the chest. I used to be one of those people who thought grief was supposed to be this neat, scheduled thing that you deal with on holidays and move on. I remember telling a buddy to "just get over it" after his grandma passed and he couldn't eat at her favorite diner for months. Felt pretty smart saying that. Then my dad died and I couldn't walk past a hardware store without losing it because he used to drag me to Lowes every weekend. Now I totally get what you're saying. Those sneaky little triggers are the ones that gut you because your brain doesn't give you a heads up. You ever find yourself avoiding a place or a song and not even realizing why until the tears show up?

Kinda eye opening reading this. I never thought about it that way before.
