Found out I was painting over dirty walls for 5 years
I rolled a fresh coat over what I thought was clean drywall last weekend, but it started peeling off in sheets an hour later. Now I'm scrubbing every wall with TSP before even opening the paint can - anyone else learn this the hard way?

Sorry this happened to you man, that peeling feeling is the worst. Scrape off all the loose paint you can first, then hit it with TSP and a good rinse before you even think about patching. You might need a bonding primer on the bare spots, something like Kilz or Zinsser, to stop it from lifting again. And don't skip the sanding between coats, it makes a huge difference.

Yeah @baker.christopher nailed it, that TSP step is the one everyone skips but it makes all the difference. Hope you get it fixed up without too much hassle man.

Learned that lesson the hard way after my whole bathroom ceiling peeled off last summer!
