Spent $60 on a cheap moisture meter before learning pinless is the only way for drywall

I was checking a ceiling leak in my bathroom with a pin type meter and it kept reading dry even though the sheetrock was clearly soft. The pinless one caught damp spots the pin type completely missed. Has anyone else had a false sense of security from those cheap meters?

My buddy spent $15 on a Harbor Freight pin meter that's been spot-on for his wood shop for years. Maybe the issue is user error, not the tool itself.
