Shoutout to the guy who told me to check the suction hose gasket first
Spent 6 hours last Tuesday trying to figure out why our 8-inch cutterhead dredge in Mobile Bay kept losing prime. We checked the pump, the valves, even pulled the impeller. Finally called an old hand who just said 'check the gasket on the main suction hose flange.' It was completely shredded, letting in air. Took 20 minutes to swap once we knew. Anyone else ever waste a whole shift on something that simple?

That's just how you learn the job, right?

Honestly I used to believe that too, until my last gig. They threw me into a project with zero training and just expected me to figure it out. I spent weeks stressed and making dumb mistakes a simple guide could have fixed. It didn't feel like learning, it felt like being set up to fail. Now I see that a good workplace actually shows you the ropes first. Why should struggling alone be the only way to learn?

Sounds like they confused "learning on the job" with "being left to drown.
