Tuck the way-too-long cap end under the next shingle and call it good.

lol "tuck the way-too-long cap end under the next shingle" is basically the roofer's version of "put a bandaid on it." But real talk, how much extra cap did you actually leave hanging there? Like was it a half inch past the ridge or a full foot of extra material flopping around? Because if it was just a little bit, most people wouldn't spot it from the ground anyway. But if you had like six inches of cap sticking out past the last shingle, that's gonna look janky no matter how you try to hide it.

Yeah I've noticed this is basically how half the stuff in life works honestly. Like when you hang a picture frame and the wire is too long so you just twist it around the hook an extra time. Or when you're hemming pants and instead of cutting the extra fabric you just fold it up twice and hope it holds. It's that whole "well it's not perfect but nobody's gonna crawl up there with a tape measure" mindset. And honestly half the time people really don't notice unless you point it out and then they're like oh yeah I see it now.
