Had a weird call at a hospital in Spokane that made me rethink my approach

Got dispatched for a door issue on a 90s Otis traction unit, and the problem was actually a worn sheave groove causing the cable to jump. The building engineer told me they'd been hearing a 'thump' for weeks but kept resetting it. How often do you guys check sheave wear during routine maintenance now, or do you wait for a symptom?

Weeks of thumping" sounds like a horror movie, but maybe @patel.shane has the right idea about checking those grooves.

Man, patel.shane is totally right. I mean, after seeing a cable jump like that, I check every single groove now. I even carry a little groove gauge in my kit. If it's even a little worn, I note it right away. Waiting for a noise is just asking for a bigger problem later.

Check sheave grooves every time you do a routine inspection.
