I used to steam every single face for 10 minutes straight until a mentor told me to stop

Switched to just 2-3 minutes of steam after a client with rosacea told me I was making her redness worse. Now I see better results and less irritation, especially on sensitive skin. Anyone else cut back on steaming time?

My 8 minute steam sessions were basically a habit until I noticed the redness on a few clients actually getting worse. Five years ago I would have argued that longer steam equals deeper cleaning but now I see how harsh it can be on the skin barrier. A colleague in esthetics school convinced me to try shorter bursts and honestly the difference in skin tone is night and day.

That's a good point about the shorter bursts making a difference, but just a heads up - 8 minutes isn't really that long for steam sessions. Some estheticians go up to 15-20 minutes which is way more intense. The redness could be from the frequency or the heat level rather than the duration itself.

Heard a derm say steam can actually strip the protective barrier. @lewis.brian you might be onto something here.
